Announcements

From the President . . .

The club is off to a good start after our day time out. Two new members, Max Schultz, sponsored by Phil Griego, and Bernie Mille, sponsored by Jim Gunderson, will be installed as soon as their pins and certificates arrive. Ursula brought two great prospect to lunch two weeks ago, Jennifer Patrick and Bob Zimmerman, both clients of Ursula at the Athletic Club. Jennifer returned this week with a completed membership application and a $195 donation from her and her employer. Jennifer's membership will be discussed at our February 4, board meting. Rob Nuddleman brought Robert Greeley as a prospective member. We'd also like to welcome Josh Hall, Jerry's son, who is headed back to graduate school after his winter break.

Don't forget the prize for the member who brings in the most new members. Dinner for two at the Silicon Valley Capital Club, a truly fine dining experience. So far, the stats are as follows:

Speaking of members, Roger Brandon is back after a long leave of absence, and announced his desire to be restored too full membership status. Welcome back!

Keep those members coming. Be part of the solution, bring a guest to lunch. Also, be sure to read the info on Your Duties as a Captain and check the schedule to see when you are up next!

An Invitation from the Tri-Valley Exchange Club

The Tri-Valley Exchange Club at Lawrence Livermore National Lab would like to extend an invitation to our sister clubs in the Bay Area. Please join us on March 18 as our guest speaker Terry Turchie, Director of the Lab's Security Awareness for Employees Program, discusses "In Pursuit of Justice: The War on Terrorism." Turchie, a former FBI agent, has extensive experience in investigating both domestic and international terrorists. He led the FBI team that investigated and eventually arrested "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski. Prior to coming to the Lab, Turchie had overall responsibility for managing the FBI's counterterrorism program.

The Tri-Valley Exchange Club meets at the Livermore Lab located off Vasco Road in Livermore. Meetings run from 12 noon to 1 PM. Driving time from the Oakland area is 30-45 minute, depending on traffic. Driving instructions are available on the Web at: http://www.llnl.gov/llnl/05community/directions.html

Because the Lab is a national security facility, guests must be U.S. Citizens, and badging is required for access. Badging requires the following information from all attendees:

For badging purposes, please RSVP to Ann Willoughby, at willoughby1@llnl.gov by February 7. I will need to know the number of attendees from your club and the above information for each attendee. Attendees should plan on arriving at the LLNL Badge Office by 11:30 AM to assure they make the start of our meeting at 12 noon. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (925) 423-4234.

Tri-Valley's January Newsletter is available here.

Covenant of Service

Accepting the divine privilege, of single and collective responsibility as life's noblest gift, I covenant with my fellow Exchangites:

To consecrate my best energies to the uplifting of Social, Religious, Political and Business ideals;

To discharge the debt I owe to those of high and low estate who have served and sacrificed that the heritage of American citizenship might be mine;

To honor and respect law, to serve my fellow men, and to uphold the ideals and institutions of my Country;

To implant the life-giving, society-building spirit of Service and Comradeship in my social and business relationships;

To better serve in Unity with those seeking better conditions, better understanding and greater opportunities for all.

Your Duties as Captain of the Day

Every once in a while, we all need a little reminder of what responsibilities befall the Captain of the Day. In order to ensure our meetings run smoothly and are enjoyable for all, the Captain of the Day must step up to the task.

The Captain of the Day is responsible for obtaining a speaker for their day. If the Captain cannot locate a speaker, Ursula Joosten and Jerry Hall may be able to obtain back-up speakers. Be sure to check the schedule to see when you are scheduled to be Captain of the Day. You should obtain a speaker well in advance of your scheduled date and let Rob Nuddleman know the speaker's name so he can put it in the Exciter.

The Captain of the Day will introduce the speaker. Even if Jerry or Ursula obtain the speaker, the Captain should sit near the speaker at lunch, introduce him/herself and learn about the speaker. That way the Captain will be able to provide a nice introduction and will help the speaker feel invited and important.

The Captain of the Day should arrive early to the meeting because the Captain is responsible for handing out badges, welcoming guests, and selling raffle tickets before the meeting begins.

If you cannot fulfill your obligations as Captain, you are responsible for trading with another member and notifying Rob Nuddleman and Phil Griego about the change. That way Rob can modify the schedule in the Exciter and Phil will know who will introduce the speaker at the meeting.

The Captain's role is very important. The Captain ensures the meetings are filled with interesting content and helps guests and speakers feel welcome. It is also an opportunity to enhance your own public speaking skills. With everybody's cooperation, the Captain will lead the way to a better meeting.
