Message from the President

Hello Fellow Exchangites, Spouses and Friends,

Another year of successes for the Exchange Club of San Jose and due cause for a celebration! You have done wonders and the future holds no limitations for all of us. Let us take an evening to celebrate together and to welcome in our new/returning club officers as their new year of service begins or continues as the case may be.

Regrettably I do not have all of the details of our Celebration/Installation evening as these have not been worked out as yet. What I can tell you is that it will be held on  Friday, June 18, 2004 at the Park Plaza Hotel on Fourth Street in San Jose. Those who have been to one of our meetings recently will recognize this as our meeting location. I can also tell you that the food at the Park Plaza has been very good and Chris Billawalla (General Manager) promises the same for our evening meal. I will be hosting an "HHH" (Happy Half-Hour) from 6:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. when the meal and festivities will begin.

Please contact me if you have any questions, special diet requests or other information or services that I may be able to provide for you, as well as to confirm your attendance and any guests that you may be bringing. Due to the details not being worked out, I do not have a price for you as of yet but I will have that very soon and I will send another e-mail with that information as well as the menu for the dinner.

In Exchange and Your service,

Jerry Hall
Almost Immediate Past President

BRING A GUEST CONTEST

Enjoy a panoramic view of Silicon Valley from the 17th Floor of the Fairmont Plaza Building while dining at the Club's 4 Star restaurant! But you have to play to win by joining our membership drive contest called "Bring a Guest Contest."

Starting May 1, and continuing through July 31, Dave Mowbray will keep a tally of all members who bring guests who are prospective members to every meeting. He's going to keep score. The idea is that if we bring a guest, its up to the club as a whole to sell the guest on the idea of joining Exchange. To count towards the contest, the guest must be a prospect for membership. Members must bring a total of at least 3 guests between now and July 31 to be eligible.

Dave has the responsibility of making this determination before tallying the results at each meeting. He will also announce each member's standings in the competition each week. At the end of the contest, Dave will announce the winner who has brought the most prospects to regular meetings. The winner will receive a dinner for two at the luxurious Silicon Valley Capital Club.

Join the Fun, Bring a Guest.

MEMORIAL DAY

General John A. Logan's
Memorial Day Order

General Order
No. 11
Headquarters, Grand Army of the Republic
Washington, D.C., May 5, 1868

I. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose, among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foe? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their death a tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the Nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and found mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of free and undivided republic.

If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain in us.

Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the Nation's gratitude,--the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.

II. It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to call attention to this Order, and lend its friendly aid in bringing it to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.

III. Department commanders will use every effort to make this order effective.

By command of:
JOHN A. LOGAN,
Commander-in-Chief.
N. P. CHIPMAN,
Adjutant-General.
