AT OUR LAST MEETING

Judge Del Pozzo revisited us and spoke about his work at the Drug Court. Judge Del Pozzo informed us how Proposition 36 is getting more people into drug treatment centers when they are facing drug possession charges. Although not all people using Proposition 36 actually want to get off drugs, at least some of the participants are able to turn their lives around. Every little bit helps.

We were also joined by Derek White and his parents, Steve and Adair. Derek is one of this year's recipients of the Young citizenship Award. Derek came to Davis from Hayes Elementary School. In the first semester of 7th grade, Derek earned a perfect 4.00 GPA. He participated in wrestling, basketball, band, and CJSV. He is involved in a roller hockey team. He enjoys hockey, constructing things, and helping smaller children. After high school, he wants to get a job refereeing for hockey as a start and then work his way toward architecture.

Some teacher comments about Derek include:
"Outstanding student. Always does his work is it is always done well."
"He is well-liked by all."
"Conscientious, well-rounded young man. Respected by peers and adults."
"Incredibly respectful."
"Outstanding in all ways. Such a fine young gentleman, scholar, athlete, and band member."

Our Treasurer/Secretary reported that the Board approved a donation to Somos Amigos which will be used to purchase vitamin drops for the locals in Naranjito. Additionally, the Friends of the Children thanked us for our donation too the Children's Interview Center which will be used to update the room where they interview abused children.

TODAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY

The War of 1812

On June 18, 1812, President James Madison signed a declaration of war against Great ritain, marking the beginning of the War of 1812. Frustrated by British maritime practices and support of Native American resistance to western expansion, the Americans entered the war with ambitious plans to invade Canada, a goal that was never realized. The strength of the British army proved too great for the American forces. Both on land and at sea, American troops met with great losses. Unbeknownst to the Amercians, on June 16th, two days before President Madison's declaration of war, the British Parliament voted to lift the maritime restrictions that formed the basis of the American's frustrations. If they had telephones in 1812 the two and a half year war may have been avoided.

In August 1814, British troops entered Washington, D.C., and burned the Capitol and the White House. By December, both the Americans and the British recognized that the time had come to end the conflict. Representatives of the two nations met in Belgium on December 24 and signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war and restored previously recognized boundaries between the United States and British territory in North America.
