President's Corner

I was very pleased with the attendance at our first official meeting of my administration. Although we had some confusion on the meeting site because Waves decided to close down for repairs, everyone eventually got the message and we had 11 members enjoying a good lunch and lots of friendship at Goodfellas.

The food and service were wonderful but the place is not really conducive to a good meeting or a speaker. So,... once again we are looking for a new meeting place within our budget. We will remain at Goodfellas until further notice. We will not invite a speaker until we have the right ambiance. Linda Brown volunteered to check on Lou's Village and Jose Posadas agreed to check out Eulipia and Blakes. Phil Griego, Dan Webb, Lori Formusa and Bonita Gibson, visited 91 St. Peter's, next door to Goodfellas. The room there is perfect: private, quiet, well appointed. The food is great and if we keep our selections limited, and members buy their own drinks, we can stay within our budget. Each member will receive a menu in the mail. Choose four meals for $11 or less and we will compare that to the other information we get.

Members also reported on their GIVEAKIDAFLAGTOWAVE adventures. Sounds like they were all successful and that next year we should order more flags.

New member Jose Posadas publishes "Downtown," a periodical for all the merchants in the downtown area. He has a regular article on our meetings and would like to print a short article on the history of Exchange and the San Jose Chapter. Bonita Gibson, our new public relations director will work with Jose to get him an article to publish. We also revived the raffle. Each Captain of the day will bring 5 scratchers to be raffled off starting next week. Raffle tickets go for a buck.

Well that's all for this week. We're off to a good start. Don't forget our pledge we all took: We promised to bring a guest to every meeting. Let's work together to grow this club back to where it should be. We have 20 members on our roster. 7 of those are associate members. Our goal is to double the size of this club before the end of my term. Together, we can do it!

Yours in Exchange,

Phil Griego

Announcements

The Sacramento Exchange Club is celebrating its 80th Anniversary on August 20th. We are all invited to attend the celebration. Check future issues of the Exciter for more information or contact Ken Flick at 916-786-7273. The Sacramento Exchange Club expects Gus Parker, the new National Exchange Club President to attend the festivities. Don't forget about our Associate Membership. Installation Banquet 2002

July 10th the Exchange Club of San Jose held its 2002 Installation Banquet. Our new club officers and board of directors were sworn in at the gala event. One of our newest members, Diane Lopez, was also inducted as a fellow Exchangite. Held at the beautiful Villages in San Jose, the event was filled with good fun, great fellowship, and a rousing rendition of Heart & Soul by Rob Nuddleman and his wife Lydia.

Congratulations goes out to Jerry Hall who was voted this years "Exchangite of the Year!" Jerry had this to say about the honor:

I must admit I was surprised and honored to have been chosen the Exchangite of the Year. In such a small group of dedicated people, it is quite an honor. I wish for us all to expand our membership so that we may accomplish even more. As we go forward, I hope that we will acquire a meeting space that will accommodate our anticipated growth and result in each member feeling the reward of accomplishment. You have truly done a lot with a little and as we grow, we can do even more. Looking forward to a new year with enthusiasm and desire to serve.

In Exchange, Jerry Hall

Now everyone knows why Jerry was chosen as Exchangite of the Year. His dedication, enthusiasm and humility inspires us all. CONGRATULATIONS JERRY!

Phil Griego, our newly installed President, gave a wonderful acceptance speech and reinforced his commitment to seeing our club increase its membership. This year's events promise to be better than ever.

Jon Renson, Jim Gunderson and Bruce Newgren were inducted to our board of directors for the 2002-2004 term. Thank you for your commitment.

Rob Nuddleman took on additional duties as the club's new secretary this year. His excellent work as our club's treasurer was acknowledged with a beautiful plaque presented by our Immediate Past President, Lori Formusa.

One of the highlights of the evening occurred when Lori gave out membership pins identifying the number of years some of our members have been involved with the Exchange Club. Bill Staupp received his 50 year pin! WOW!

This year promises to be a year dedicated to growth and community service. I am proud to be a member of the Exchange Club of San Jose.

This Week in American History

At dawn on the morning of July 11, 1804, political antagonists and personal enemies Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met on the heights of Weehawken, New Jersey to settle their long-standing differences with a duel. The participants fired their pistols in close succession. Burr's shot met its target immediately, fatally wounding Hamilton and leading to his death the following day. Burr escaped unharmed. This tragically extreme incident reflected the depth of animosity aroused by the first emergence of the nation's political party system.

Both men were political leaders in New York: Burr, a prominent Republican, and Hamilton, leader of the opposing Federalist party. Burr had found himself the brunt of Hamilton's political maneuvering on several occasions, including the unusual presidential election of 1800, in which vice-presidential candidate Burr almost defeated his running mate, presidential candidate Thomas Jefferson. In 1804, Hamilton opposed Burr's closely fought bid for governor of New York. On the heels of this narrow defeat, Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel on the grounds that Hamilton had publicly maligned his character.

Once sanctioned by law and custom, dueling declined in the Northern states after the Revolution, though it flourished longer in the American South. By 1804, it had been outlawed in New York, forcing Burr in the aftermath of his encounter with Hamilton to give up his political ambitions and flee the state to avoid a warrant for his arrest.
The further career of Aaron Burr is discussed in a feature, part of Words and Deeds in American History, on the June 13 1807 Subpoena served on Thomas Jefferson to testify at Aaron Burr's trial for treason.
