THRIVING IN GILROY:

A Report from our District Director, Phil Griego

As part of my district director duties I must visit the clubs in my division to see how things are going and to offer whatever assistance I can carrying forward the mission of Exchange. My visit to Gilroy was most gratifying. They had 12 members attending and I was honored to induct my first new member for that club. They are a vibrant active club making their mark on the community in many ways. Their One nation Under God Program has brought together a diverse group of community leaders to create a sidewalk display of 100 American Flags in their downtown for every major national holiday, such as Armed Forces Day, July 4, Presidents Day. Boy Scout troops volunteered to raise and lower the flags each holiday in perpetuity. They are also planning a Fall Auction with Dancing to a big band sound November 7. many of them plan to attend our District Lunch December 2 and make a day of it helping San Jose decorate the hall for "Christmas for the Kids."

Among their many other activities Al Pithier, charter member, is running for Mayor of Gilroy. Another member is running for city counsel. This is an active club. Keep up the good work and keep getting new members.

September 30, 2003, SJ Exchange is proud to present a Discussion on the Upcoming Recall and What It Means for California with SJSU Professor Terry Christensen, Ph.D. University of North Carolina, 1972.

This is an excellent opportunity to bring a guest.

A specialist on state and local politics, Christensen has authored six books, including Movers and Shakers, a widely cited work on community power
with a San Jose focus (co-authored with Phil Trounstine, who is now Acting Director of the SJSU Survey and Policy Research Institute) and Local
Politics: Governing at the Grassroots, a text reflecting his years of teaching and participation in local politics. A new edition of California
Government and Politics co-authored by Larry Gerston, was published in January, 2001. Some of his extensive writing about San Jose political
history is now available on his page on the Political Science Department website.
